Chessington is an area in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames within Greater London. Popular with families thanks to its varied attractions and a top choice for couples due to its scenic location, pubs and eateries, if you’re looking for places to stay near Chessington you’re in the right place. You can find out more below.
Historically part of Surrey, Chessington’s name derives from Anglo-Saxon and the history of the area is undeniable – it is mentioned twice in the Domesday Book under two different names. The mansion at Chessington World of Adventures was originally built in 1348; during the English Civil War it was a royalist stronghold before being destroyed by Oliver Cromwell’s forces. Over time, the grounds have been many things and in 1931 they became a zoo. Notable residents are aplenty including that Samuel Crisp who called Chessington Hall home, therefore giving it a place in 18th-century history. If you like Blue Plaque properties then be sure to stop by 207 Hook Road – Enid Blyton lived at the address in 1920 for four years.
