Location Spotlight: Kingston
Looking for what’s on in Surrey this Christmas? We’ve got you covered. While Kingston used to be part of the county, it was moved a long time ago to Greater London. Never fear – as we continue our blog series, let us illuminate the areas most easily accessible from the hotel and give you some inspiration on what to do during your stay.
Kingston is an area of southwest London, England, 10 miles southwest of Charing Cross. It is the administrative centre of the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames.
The ancient market town is notable as the place in which Saxon kings were often crowned owing to its symbolic location. Kingston used to be part of a large ancient parish in the county of Surrey and the town was considered an ancient borough, reforming in 1835 and becoming a part of greater London in 1965.
Things To Do
There’s lots of exciting things to do in Kingston. The historic market town transforms into a magical, wintery paradise at Christmas, with the streets becoming inhabited with numerous traditional wooden cabins and stalls, bright warm lights and full to the brim with festive cheer. Kingston boasts over 500 stores spread over 2 shopping malls, as well as an independent marketplace, making it one of the most sought after shopping destinations in London. The Ancient Marketplace and adjacent streets play host to numerous traders, selling hand-crafted ornaments and unique gifts, alongside delicious street food and mulled wine – a perfect winter warmer.
The Candy Cane forest also makes a return again this year, a couple weeks before Christmas. This children’s entertainment hub has rides, games and lots of special surprises for the little ones.
There’s also plenty to see and experience at the nearby Rose Theatre, with exciting performances taking place throughout the year. The annual Christmas celebration takes place on the 18th December, featuring a wide range of acts including Singing It Back’s Harmonies For Heroines & the Prima Voce Choir. There is also a production of Hansel and Gretel running from the 6th December to the 6th January – and promises to be a revamped festive retelling of the Grimm’s brothers famous tale, one to not be missed.
